Conclusion!! Yes!!!

Thus not just art but various festivals are now part and parcel of life whether they are local or mega ones, they have their loyal followers that they have to keep by constantly drawing their attention and perhaps even the more infamous ones can look to festivals like the Rio Carnival in Brazil or the Oktoberfest in Germany to be as successful as them just like how the Singapore Arts Festival has found success in its own way.

Thank ypu for being a great audience!!!

And Thats All Folks!!!!!

Food for thought???

This may not a be a tourism benefit but I guess by the numbers, it shows that Singaporeans are being more sophisticated in terms of their art choices, we are no longer just thinking that these performances are for those of a higher social class but rather everyone has a chance to enjoy all these now regardless of if one is a avid art fan of olden arts or a fan of modern arts where more realism is incorporated in their movements or art piece.

Tourism benefits???

The Singapore Arts Festival has only about 10% of overseas patrons thus in terms of tourism benefits, there may be a small number of them that may extend their stay to enjoy a play or two but it is completely different from Chingay which is a hallmark event in which tourists actually pay to specially attend the event due to its international promotions.

Naturally there will also be an increase in revenue but mostly from locals so we are able to not be afraid of leakages. There may also be a small number increase in visitors to the various local scenic sites.

Their sponsors also include some foreign organizations thus by going through these intermediaries, we are able to attract the people who may not know our name or the event itself but with their fate in the intermediaries, they will perhaps be tempted to come and enjoy a show and thus even take a holiday to boost their knowledge and experience.

Not sure if this is right but hopefully it is!!! :):)

Reflection on purpose???

Personally, as the festival actually is more based on local spectators rather than overseas patrons, I feel that the main purpose of the event suits us as like now especially in the poor market where many cannot afford to travel, they can just go to one of their free performances to enjoy like cultural shows like the African dances or songs of the outback from Australia.

We are also able to know more about countries that take a special pride in their art and through their eyes experience how it is developed in order to suit the tastes of the now picky generation whereby art is not from a artist point of view anymore but it has to have a part of realism where people are able to connect to.

The purpose???

This festival originally seeked to provide a platform for local artists in Singapore across the diverse communities. But now it has transformed into a platform to bring in new and innovate works whether internationally or locally and also investing in bold and contemporary arts that will enable audience to see a different side.

They also encourage international and local collaboration in order to present the harmonious tone that is happening in Singapore since or even before the festival first started.

Phew many posts now!!! Yeah!!

My interaction!!

My personal experience or interaction with the various stakeholders would be mostly through the various media, newspapers and advertisements on the telly, or just word of mouth from the teachers. I did not interact with the ticket seller as it was done online but it was lagging as the system was slow but when I collected the ticket face to face, at least she was polite and even reminded me to enjoy the show.

Arriving at the lounge outside the centre, I felt like a little kid, very out of place while the other adults all seemed to have British or American accents and in nice dresses or in formal casual wear, mostly it seemed really fake as they were having really small chitchats that looked out of the movies that portrayed high social class films. Sitting down in the second level of the Drama Centre Theatre, and looking downwards at the participants was exactly like a foreign movie screening where I had to constantly look at the subtitles.

At the end of the play, I remembered everyone clapping and almost immediately leaving though there was a Q&A session. I sat through the session quietly, their English pronunciation was a bit hard to understand but at least I could see some interaction between the cast and audience.

Many stakeholders in SAF!!

The stakeholders can be determined in the terms of their commitment to the event be it an individual, groups of people or organizations. The Singapore Arts Festival in terms of highest commitment to lowest of stakeholder, first is definitely the host organization as without their hard work in inviting people to perform or working out details with various heartland malls to showcase the performances, the whole event might have continued but without achieving their goals or without substance.

Next is host community, helping out like giving information to the media for write ups or interviews but even if the event fails, they will not have to shoulder the blame, thus they may not be as committed.

Next is sponsor, all they need is to provide the paper with the green jackets and they are able to see their company’s logo or products being published on every brochure that is being handed out, or the more committed ones may even sponsor a entire show to back up the performers to order to attract their loyal customers that have fate in their tastes.

Next is the participants, without their hard work and persistence in the work that they are doing as like in a play, one must be the character or be the emotion he/she is tasked to be, they are also the ones trying to spread their love for the arts to the audience and the ones that can give the audience a lasting experience that hopefully attract them back to the theatre again.

Next is the co workers, as without them, the event may not run as smoothly as they can be ticket sellers, merchandise sellers or even just a usher, enjoying a play also includes the atmosphere, a bad experience leaves a bad taste in the mouth that can cause the event to lose a customer which in their case, every patron is important regardless of a paying or non paying one.

Then is the media, good relations with them can result in excellent huge headlines of write ups and recommendations that will attract many. Bad relations can result in either a ditching aside the article or just a small article right next to the obituaries that may just be skipped through.

Lastly is the spectators, the committed ones are either supporters for their family performing or they have being a follower of the genre of the play for a long time and enjoy it. If not most of them are probably because of reasons like school work that sort of forced one to go but hopefully every spectator was able to get something out of it and return once again to enjoy this successful event.

All hail to marketing events!!!

In marketing events, it is split into two categories, experiential and facilitating components. The former mostly includes what the customer will experience while the latter is helping the event to attract these potential customers.

Under experiential, we start with the product which in this case is the various shows by performers in the Singapore arts Festival. By having various kinds of performances to attract different target audience, they are able to cater to a wider group rather than just various audience segments.

Next we look at place, atmosphere, the setting and even features of the location is important as though one may be interested in the play, but if the location is out of the way, they may have second thoughts and opt for a closer destination hosting a play that may not be so interesting.

We also have programming in terms of the objectives of the event itself like Singapore Arts festival seeks to bring out the publics’ imagination and also encourages crossovers between performers and audience be it a interaction or just a performance. Like what the former has done is to provide free performances to the doorsteps of locals at nearly the whole of Singapore like hip-hop dance show at Ang Mo Kio and art structures at Marina Barrage, the examples show the standard of quality that we get in terms of how far the organizing committee is willing to go in order to promote art.

Lastly we have the people, they include practically everybody from the committee to back stage staff to audience to volunteers and of course the performers. Showing off art is a very labour intensive as humans are able to understand the other by the emotions or even actions that the performers show that keeps us captivated and hungry for more, but mostly it stimulates our thinking and inspires us to stick to our dreams and not to give up.

Under facilitating, packaging and distribution is in terms of distribution network which requires various types of intermediaries in which good relationship must be maintained in order for a smooth operation especially when selling tickets.

Next we have price like in terms of ticket prices, package prices. Mostly there will be a range of prices based to cater to different people and it mostly affects the interest of the potential customers. As price can be in terms of even free things like time or forgone opportunities just to watch the show.

Next is partnerships like Singapore arts festival works with various food outlets and hotels to attract customers like if they buy a ticket to a play, they are able to get a discount on the food that they order at the various food outlet that is cooperating with them.

Lastly we look at promotions that mostly include good public relation skills and attractive advertising. For example, posters can be seen on buses and bus stops promoting the events and there is a constant write up on the various plays in the newspapers with critics even rating them, thus gathering more peoples’ interest.

A little technical, but should be easy to understand!

Who is Singapore Arts Festival's compeititor?

The Singapore Arts Festival is comparable to the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland as they also promote the arts and are actually working with the former by having a contest on the former’s website to allow people to win tickets to go to Edinburgh and enjoy the festival.

Edinburgh International Festival has been around for a long time since 1947 and ever since its success, various events have been modeled after it. They are very successful in reaching out to audiences that might be able to connect to the festival and they are starting from education institutes whereby they work with the schools by having art exhibitions and of course various workshops of dance, theatre and all these happens in a all-year round specially planned programmes for the schools. Likewise in terms of Singapore, as the festival this time coincides with school time, thus they are offering special discounts for the schools to bring the students as part of special school programmes by working with Edusave.

The festivals also widely use the internet as a tool to attract the internet savvy or yg (younger generation) people by using facebook, which is very common nowadays with many other events as it has a wide database of many users. They also have blogs dedicated to the festivals where they put up information like timings, latest news or any changes.

Difference wise, perhaps as Edinburgh has the upper hand in which they have more experience in organizing this event, their webpage is incredible, they are able to give various detailed information that may have never crossed my mind before, like the explanation of their festival logo, of its meaning and representation. Edinburgh’s site has even annual reports of financial happenings and the numbers that happened since 1990s, which to me is very informative, they even have a interactive brochure that is a gimmick but it attracts me and even tempts me. Singapore has a vibrant webpage but it is still lacking in the information department thus one has to often scatter on the net in order to find more information.

Oh man, I will paste the pictures and synonsis of the play later when I have time. Hahahaha! :)

Where did I go???

Singapore Arts Festival, three words that ring a bell in everyone’s’ minds, every year it operates over a course of four to five weeks and attracts roughly 600,000 people each year since 1977. Frankly I have no clue what or how the whole event operates in Singapore and furthermore the event’s audience is mostly locals while tourists only form about 10% of the audience. Anyone may have gone for a visual arts, dance, music or theatre performance without knowing that it was part of a major event.

I went to a play which I picked out of a few which I felt was interesting called Sin Sangre or called Without Blood. It was performed in Spanish with English subtitles that lasted 90 minutes without intermission and took place at the Drama Centre Theatre. Personally, though I cannot really understand the language that they speak but throughout the play, one is able to sense the emotions that the actors bring out in order to draw the audience into the play and imagine themselves as the characters which happened to me and at the end it was as if I had another life that was just discovered by myself.

Thankfully I enjoyed myself!!! :)))
